Life isn’t all……

D&AD competition entry fulfilling a Penguin book brief.

This book humorous story revolves round three friends living in a diaspora culture. The brief called for the cover to feel accessible whilst representing the themes. The judges were looking for a striking cover with imagination a concept and strong typography to stand out on a bookshelf.

Stylistically I fused the bright colours and a mandala shape from eastern culture with simple minimal geometry to represent tradition and modern living within two cultures. This interplay of shapes further represents the complexity of life, relationships and their journey they are on together. The bright colour palette and imagery mix created a vibrant look which would draw in attention and elevate itself amongst competition within a retail setting.

I placed the Goddess Durga three times as a playful representation of the tree main protagonists. Durga was a appropriate cultural analogy as Durga represents feminine prowess, wisdom and punishment.

The typeface used was a mixture of traditional serif typeface mixed with an informal eastern/Latin fusion. The main header was positioned along a curved axis to appear to be travelling along and in a wonky fashion. Just like life.
